Checking For Piston-to-Valve Clearance

Here’s some pictures of a CP Carrillo forged piston in a Dart Big M block for a big block Chevy based drag race engine we built. In these pics there is clay on top of the piston which we use for checking the piston-to-valve clearance. The clay is placed on the piston and then the cylinder head and valvetrain is all installed and setup. We then spin the engine over by hand two full revolutions. The valvetrain and cylinder head is then removed and we measure the thickness of the clay at the impression marks left by the valves.
