Here are some before, during & after pics of an axle for a Terex 696 Telehandler, or reach forklift. The front & back sides of the axle have a round boss that we call a trunnion pivot. The copper flanged bushings install over the OD of the round pivot bosses & then the trunnions slide on over the copper bushings. The trunnion pivots allow the axles to rock, or pivot, side-to-side when mounted in the machine. The pivot bosses were extremely worn & damaged. Setting up the axle on the machine was quite the challenge & very time consuming. We ended up machining an aluminum jig on our smaller cnc machine which we utilized to mount & locate the complete axle assembly onto our larger Rottler multipurpose boring & milling cnc machine. After coming up with a solution to mount & locate the axle on the machine we then welded up the OD’s of the worn & damaged pivot bosses. We then wrote a program for the cnc machine to machine the welded OD’s of the pivot bosses using circular interpolation. Aftet the pivot bosses were built back up & machined to spec we installed the new copper flanged bushings as well as the cast iron trunnion mounting supports. This salvaged the axle assembly & got the machine back in operation for our customer.
