Here are some pics of a Caterpillar CEM, clean emissions module we cleaned. The CEM is basically a DPF, or diesel particulate filter, like is used on smaller passenger size diesel trucks & vehicles. The ceramic honeycomb type filters are referred to as the SCRs (selective catalytic reduction), DOCs (diesel oxidation catalysts) and they trap the soot & exhaust pollutants which cause ash to build up. This build up chokes airflow & raises the back pressure of the exhaust system. We clean the filters, or substrate, of all the soot & ash to restore airflow which keeps the equipment compliant with emissions regulations.
